In the last 5 years I have developed a specific interest in the wellbeing of parents-to-be, parents, people who desire, think or plan to become parents.
Parenthood is a unique journey of transition that can bring a variety of associated emotions.
Some people can feel excited and/or scared at the same time. Others may have doubts, questions and might feel lost in the diversity of approaches to parenting issues.
Some people desire to be a parent and hit brick walls along the way, obstructing or impeding their desire. As a result, for some the journey can be expensive emotionally, financially and relationally by requiring specific treatment and procedure.
For some, parenting can happen almost unexpectedly and might come with shock or feeling unprepared. Others have had plans about children since their teenage years and can be met by ambivalent emotions when the plan becomes a reality.
Some parents encounter difficulties during pregnancy with complex decisions to take regarding prenatal screenings, termination, abortion, miscarriage, traumatic birth experiences, vulnerable mental and physical capacities in the months after pregnancy.
Some parents might find themselves tired, overly tired at certain stages of their journey. They might encounter dissonance with their partners or feel the heaviness of responsibility if parenting solo.
Some parents feel unsupported by family (because of differences in the value system and/or geographical distance), friends, work and question why and what has happened that causes their loneliness.
These scenarios capture some of the stories I hear in the therapy room from mothers, or fathers; from mothers-to-be and fathers-to-be as well as mature parents. Our aim is to work together to explore what is challenging in the journey, what the needs are, and patterns in feelings, thoughts and behaviours. The hope is to find awareness, growth, a safer space to be with oneself and feeling OK.
